Millenium Falcon NAV-COMM pilot chairs

NAV-COMM CHAIR

LIFESIZE REPLICA!

The Nav-comm chairs seen in the Falcon in episodes 4-9 are based on an EJECTON SEAT produced by Martin Baker.  Specifically they were based on the Mk. IV seats (weight-reduced variant) utlized on the RAF Sea Venom and MV 4AV1-2. The seats were stripped down, re-detailed and repainted before being installed as set dressing in the FALCON interior.

watch the chair in the last portion of this video:

Here you will see the construction of this set piece, scratch made piece-by-piece!

This office chair is fully functional and mounted on a swivel base which allows it to pivot, swivel and tilt.   An incredible piece of functional furniture!

First let's have a look at the real ejection seat...

The Martin Baker ejection seat was widely used in the Britsh RAF Sea Venom FAW.22.

In my research I discovered that the control box mounted to the right side of each chair is also seen in the pilot's seat on SLAVE 1.

I took the structure apart in my head, scaled it and faithfully rendered each component as CAD files for CNC milling and laser cutting techniques.  Materials used are MDF, Acrylic and aluminum.

When you take a digital concept and begin creating it in real life, you sometimes see unique things happen.  In this case, I realized that my measurement for the width of the chairback needed to be widened to be able to sit comfortably.  This means that some of the other items need to be rescaled and resized.  It takes many many hours of patient building to be able to achieve a faithful resolution.
